DR PHILIP CHAN – BIOGRAPHY

Dr Philip Chan is a qualified Diagnostic and Interventional Radiologist based in Melbourne, and the Founder and Director of Whittlesea Interventional Radiology & Embolisation Specialist (WIRES).

Dr Chan currently holds a public appointment as Consultant Interventional Radiologist at Northern Health, where he serves as Head of Interventional Radiology. He has previously held appointments at Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre, where he pioneered Victoria’s first kidney cryoablation service, as well as Alfred Health and Western Health.

After completing his radiology training, he undertook subspecialty training in Interventional Radiology at Monash Health and the University of British Columbia in Vancouver and is certified by the European Board of Interventional Radiology (EBIR). He and has received scholarships, awards, and grants for his research and regularly presents at educational events and conferences.

Dr Chan is highly experienced in a wide range of minimally invasive procedures, with special interest in embolisation and interventional oncology.

Dr Chan is committed to providing high-quality care, particularly to the community in Melbourne’s northern suburbs. He established WIRES in response to a gap in Interventional Radiology services in this region.

PROCEDURAL LIST

This is a non exhaustive list of minimally invasive procedures offered by Dr Chan:

Dr Chan has substantial experience in embolisation. Embolisation is a procedure used to stop blood flow to a certain part of your body by blocking a small artery or vein. This can be done in the following conditions:

  • Benign prostate enlargement.

  • Uterine fibroids & adenomyosis

  • Painful knee osteoarthritis

  • Other musculoskeletal conditions such as frozen shoulder & golfer’s/tennis elbow (epicondylitis)

  • Pelvic congestion syndrome

  • Varicocoeles or dilated testicular veins

Interventional oncology (IO) is a minimally invasive cancer treatment that uses medical imaging to guide procedures that deliver treatment directly to a tumor. Dr Chan has substantial experience in:

  • Port insertion & removal.

  • Y90 Radioembolisation or Selective Internal Radiation Therapy (SIRT) for liver cancers/metastasis.

  • Transarterial ChemoEmbolisation (TACE) for liver cancers.

  • Bland tumour embolisation.

Dr Chan has substantial expereince in the following urological procedures:

  • Nephrostomy insertion.

  • Ureteric balloon dilatation and stent insertion.

Hepatobiliary and portal venous intervention involves the liver, the portal vein, gallbladder and biliary system. Dr Chan has substantial experience in:

  • Cholecystostomy.

  • Biliary drainage, balloon dilatation and stenting.

  • Portal vein embolisation.

  • Transvenous obliteration.

  • TIPSS.

Vascular procedures involve procedure of the blood vessels in the body. These may include restoration of blood flow, long term venous access or implanting a disease to prevent clot migration.

Dr Chan has substantial experience in:

  • Hickman, Permacath, tunnelled line, PICC insertions & removals.

  • IVC filter insertion & removal.

  • Venogram, venoplasty and venous stenting.

  • Angiogram, angioplasty and arterial stenting.

  • Pseudoaneurysm injection.

  • Fistulogram, fistuloplasty, fistula stenting.
